The Mayor for Tamale, Hon. Sule Salifu has admonished key stakeholders including Chiefs, religious leaders, as well as parents to recognize women and girls as the thread that holds society together who therefore deserve the support of duty bearers in realizing their full potentials in contemporary Ghana.
He was speaking at this year’s National Kayayei Dialogue session in Tamale. The program was organized by the Henry Djabah foundation in collaboration with the UNFPA under the theme: ‘Drop the pan and pick up your future’.
Hon. Sule Salifu bemoaned the current phenomenon of our innocent poor girls drifting to the south in search of non-existing jobs but who endup becoming head porters, infamously referred to as Kayayei. The Mayor was particularly unhappy about the inhumane conditions such as poor health, unwanted teenage pregnancy, sexual abuse of all forms and shape among others, that these girls are predisposed to.
Mayor Sule therefore called for concerted effort to deal with the menace
The well attended program brought together revered Chiefs including his majesty the Yoo naa, who chaired the function. The Tolon Naa, His majesty, Major Rtd Sulemana was the Guest of Honor, among other dignitaries including our own father, the MCD, Mr Gilbert B Nuuri-Teg.
