
Tamale Mayor, Hon. Abubakari Adam Takoro, delivered a heartfelt address on behalf of the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Adolf Ali John at the 2025 Damba Festival, emphasizing the significance of unity, peace, and cultural heritage. He expressed gratitude to the Gukpe-Naa and the Chiefs and people of the Gulkpegu Traditional Area for their warm reception, highlighting the festival’s role in binding the community together.

The minister observed that the Damba Festival stands as a cornerstone of cultural heritage, providing a platform for the community to reconnect with its rich history, pay homage to its esteemed ancestors, and commemorate the values that define its existence. He underscored the significance of the festival’s theme, ‘Our Heritage, Our Unity, Our Future,’ as a profound declaration that encapsulates the community’s collective identity and charted course. The resplendent regalia and vibrant cultural displays transcend mere entertainment, functioning as dynamic repositories of traditions that have been meticulously passed down through successive generations.

Hon. Adolf Ali John urged traditional leaders to continue their crucial role in maintaining peace and resolving conflicts through dialogue and traditional wisdom. He emphasized that a peaceful Northern Region relies on empowered and respected chiefs who are fully engaged in peacebuilding efforts. The minister also called on the community to celebrate differences and resolve disagreements peacefully.

The minister highlighted the menace of drug abuse, particularly among youth, and its devastating effects on health, potential, and society. He urged chiefs, elders, parents, and the community to work together to educate people about the dangers of drugs and establish support systems. He encouraged parents to create a loving and supportive home environment, while youth were advised to focus on education, skill acquisition, and hard work.

Hon. Adolf Ali John emphasized that the region’s future relies on combining heritage, unity, and a clear vision for progress. He called on the community to work together to build a future that honours the past and unites people in hope. As the festival celebrates peace, dignity, and renewed commitment, the minister wished everyone a happy Damba Festival and invoked God’s blessings.
