The 38th edition of regional and district level celebration for the northern region took place at Jerigu in the Tamale Metropolis. You would recall that first Friday of every December is set aside as a day to celebrate our gallant farmers and recognize their efforts at feeding the nation. This year’s event was under the theme: ”Accelerating Agricultural Development Through Value Chain Addition”.
The Chief of Diare, Naa Abdulai Abukari was adjudged the Norther Regional Best Farmer for this year. Naa Abdulai had 740 acres of rice,300 acres of soya beans ,859 acres of maize to his credit. He was given a certificate of honor and assorted items ,including a tricycle, poly tank ,Knapsack sprayers ,cutlasses , 2 pairs of Wallington boots among others all in recognition of his efforts at contributing to the country’s food basket.

For the district-level category, Hon. Salifu Tahiru of Lahagu in the Tamale Metropolis was adjudged the overall metro best farmer. Hon Salifu is an Assembly man for Lahagu electoral area of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly. He took home a certificate of recognition as well as assorted items including a tricycle and other farm inputs.
In his welcome remarks, the Mayor of Tamale , Hon. Sule Salifu announced that Government in partnership with Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) working through a local NGO to provide support for women in Agriculture to help in the production of food crops such as maize, groundnut and soya beans all on sustainable basis in various beneficiary communities.
The Guest of Honor ,Hon Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu , Northern Regional Minister ,in his address ,admonished farmers, particularly the youth to take full advantage of Government’s policy initiative and programs on agriculture such as planting for food and jobs (PFJ) and Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD).
