Tamale Metropolitan Assembly in collaboration with UNICEF through the Urban Sanitation Project, organized and celebrated Global Hand Washing Day on the 15th of October, 2020.
The theme for this year’s celebration was HAND HYGIENE FOR All. It was spearheaded by the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the Assembly lead by Madam Alhassan Sumayatu, Metropolitan Environmental Health officer (MEHO).
The Assembly, has been celebrating global hand washing day since 2008 with just one location. However, this year’s celebration was initially designed to reach out to a lot of people to raise awareness in hand washing with soap especially in this season of COVID-19 pandemic. However, in an attempt to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols that prevents large gatherings, the Assembly was unable to gather a lot of people for this purpose. For the above reasons, a strategy was developed to commemorate the day at different locations operating simultaneously and led by Environmental Health officers of Tamale Metro. Assembly and some staffs of Intagrad.
It was celebrated at five(5) chiefs palaces, thus, Lamashegu Naa’s palace, Dakpema palace, Gukpegu palace, Banvum Lana’s palace and Vitting Lana’s palace. A group of Assembly persons, youth leaders and magazias as well as religious leaders, both Muslims and Christians all at different locations hosting 30 participants each.
The intention was for these participants to further spread the message of hand hygiene in their various homes and wherever they found themselves. The celebration was successful and the team donated Veronica Buckets to the religious groups and the chiefs palaces.
