
The Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has in collaboration with its development partner,Catholic Relief Services, CRS, initiated processes including outreach programs to review its bye-laws on sanitation. The review is expected to guarantee effective enforcement and voluntary compliance.

As part of the stakeholder engagement, officials of the Unit embarked on palace visitations aimed at sensitizing our traditional authorities on any such areas of the existing bye-laws that have outlived its usefulness and therefore require urgent review to make it fit for purpose interms of addressing current challenges regarding sanitation.
The outcome of the review is also expected to empower and strengthen all such relevant institutions and structures in the sanitation sector including key implementing units and/or departments to deal with sanitation related offenses and the increasingly poor sanitation situation in the Tamale Metropolitan Area.

Addressing the enthusiastic audience at separate sessions ,the Head of the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the Metropolis, Hajia Sumaya Alhassan highlighted the need for household toilet . She therefore urged the community members to take advantage of subsidy intervention rollout by the CRS and other partners. The planned review she noted will entrench the inclusion of household toilet in our residential building designs,making it a condition precedence for the acquisition of building permit.
Hajia Sumaya also hinted that the courts in an arrangement with the assembly have earmarked a particular day to prosecute sanitation and sanitation related offenses. This move she added will not only enhance the revenue basket of the assembly but also help promote good sanitation and hygiene practices in the metropolis.

At the Bamvim palace , the regent was enthused about the move and pledged his unwavering support in the course of the review process and subsequent enforcement of the proposed amendments.
Earlier the team was at the Vittin palace to speak to them about the planned exercise .
Other palaces targeted for this engagement included the Dakpema palace and the Lamashegu palace among other key palaces in the catchment area
She was in the company of the PRO of the Assembly , the Assembly members of the targeted areas as well as the representative of Yeni Sapta Naa( sanitation chief in Dagbon) among other officials.
