Mayor of Tamale Launches District-Level National Sanitation Day: A New Era for a Cleaner City.

Tamale, October 4, 2025—Today marked the dawn of a renewed commitment to a cleaner Tamale as the city’s Mayor, Hon. Alhaji Abu Takoro, officially launched the district-level National Sanitation Day. This well-attended event, held at Jubilee Park, is a cornerstone of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly’s ongoing efforts to raise public awareness and foster environmental consciousness under the nationwide “Clean Up Ghana” agenda.

The highly patronized exercise demonstrated a powerful unity of purpose, bringing together Honourable Assembly members, traditional authorities, traders, youth groups, and dedicated residents.
Performing the launch, Mayor Takoro expressed his profound gratitude to all stakeholders whose collective and individual efforts have contributed to the initiative’s resounding success. He was particularly encouraged by the strong participation of security agencies, NGOs, CSOs, political party functionaries, the Honourable Assembly members, and the media, all of whom joined the people of Tamale to make the inaugural exercise a truly collaborative success.

Mayor Takoro stressed that this initiative is not a one-off event, but a call to civic responsibility and collective action aimed at embedding a culture of regular cleaning and proper waste disposal.

Mayor Abu Takoro emphasized a critical new mandate: starting today, October 4, 2025, the first Saturday of every ensuing month will be observed as Sanitation Day. To ensure maximum participation, all shops and businesses will be closed from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm, allowing every resident to actively participate in cleaning their communities.

The inaugural effort saw major streets and surroundings cleaned, including extensive desilting works on gutters and drains. This concentrated exercise successfully covered the central business district and other key public places, setting a high standard for the cleaner city Tamale aims to become.
